GUEST:  Elizabeth Thompson, Professor of History at the University of Virginia, specializing in the Middle East. Her most recent book is Justice Interrupted: The Struggle for Constitutional Government in the Middle East. Amazon.

TOPIC:  Professor Thompson shares this compelling historic perspective on the nation of Syria in the wider context of the Middle East.  “The war going on in Syria now is in part a proxy war between Iran, Saudi Arabia and Turkey,” she explains. “Any intervention we may talk about on the part of the United States will be an intervention not only to save Syrians but an intervention in that triangular struggle. What we are doing is in effect entering on the side of the Saudis against the Iranians, against their backers the Russians, and to some degree with the discontent of the Turks.”
